Meditation and some other rambling

It’s not often that I actually use this site as a blogging platform in the traditional sense but I did wanna take a moment to fill everyone in on how mine and Harry Ransom’s gig at Meditation went as well as touch on another topic I had been thinking about it recently.

The gigger…

I honestly had a really good time. For those that don’t follow the DC scene, this was actually my first time tagging out with Harry. I think we both made the mistake of trying to compensate for what we thought the other individual played. So Harry Ransom came in fully prepared for a typical IllEffect-Alix-Perez-filled set and I came in expecting a much more DC-techstep-dance-floor set from Ransom. Luckily, Harry did bring some of his usual material so we were able to make it work. I also learned that I have no skills whatsoever with regular old CDJ’s (like CDJ-200′s that lack the “vinyl mode”) so I’ll be sure to put that on my “work-on-that” list for the coming weeks.

The party itself went over really well I thought. Rock and Roll Hotel is actually a really cool venue and its got that perfect drum and bass vibe (i.e. dirty… but in more a Baltimore Fells Point kinda way, not a SE DC kinda way). There were plenty of people there (a nice change for DC drum and bass) and for once notice no douche-baggery. My only real complaint was the sound which just lacked completely throughout the night and almost seemed to get worse as the night wore on.

But anywho, I just wanna say thanks to Minnie over at Flateline Audio for having us out and thanks to everyone who showed up and made the party what it was. Fun.

That other shit I wanted to mention…

Onto a completely unrelated subject: I’ve been trying to catch up on the podcasts from the dubstep portion of the show. I really gotta hand it to WhighzeGreg and Kyril (no clever way to mix that with Ricky Ricardo), they do a fine job hosting a “radio show”. One thing I particularly love is how they make a point of actually announcing the names of all the tunes they’re playing as they go on throughout the night. I personally have a tough time multitasking like that when I’m hosting the show particularly when I’m trying to bounce back and forth between chatting on AIM with whoever and trying to hold a mix. But, being that this is a radio show, I am going to make a point of trying to do that more. I’m not, however, going to announce tracks over and guests that are playing. I know some DJ’s get pissy when anyone touches a mic when they’re on so who am I really… But as far as my sets are concerned, I’m on it champ!

What’s up Illeffect. Per our previous convo:
“Thanks buddy. Hope you and the wifey can make it. Get in touch with me and I’ll get you on the show again soon.”

We, unfortunately, didn’t make it out (yet again). We were painting and didn’t get finished in time (and we’re actually going to be finishing up THIS weekend).
I’m bummed, too, because it sounds like it was a REAL good time from reading your post (I dig the posting on the gigs thing, BTW). It would’ve been the perfect night for us to come out — if domesticity hadn’t kicked in. ;)

So, yeah, glad it was good for you. I’d definitely be down for swinging through and playing the show again. I had a lot of fun last time — and this time I’d be mega-uber better! :D

I like how you ended your post with “lazers”. :D

As for slots, we got lots of openings in February so drop me a message whenever you wanna get on.

Good hearing from ya! Good luck with the painting (again).
