Ransom playing breakbeats. Again. In August.
Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007So my good pal Matt Nordstrom a.k.a. Matty a.k.a. MRN a.k.a. MR. N, he hit me up last week about playing the BUZZLIFE x SLEAZE monthly event Save The Bees, which has been taking place the final Friday of each month, all summer long. Originally I was going to play drum’n'bass, and maybe bring a couple breakbeat tunes with me.
Then Buzzlife announced Buzz is coming back (September 21st is the start, weekly Fridays at Fur, check their site for more).
And then this Save The Bees night was announced as the final Save The Bees night.
Anden I get notified that the venue has decided “NO DRUM’N'BASS!” Probably because club owners and managers do not know the difference from a deep D-Bridge tune from a technological meltdown Limewax tune… and the last time they had some drum’n'bass, they probably fixated on the burning depths of hell opening up from the speakers when some hard tune got played. So I am told “need you to play a breaks set, they’re saying no dnb.” Fine, I’m game, but I am going to play some other stuff too I think. Anyways, enough bitching from me, I actually really want to play some more drum’n'bass sets (and not hour long or tag team sets, unless they are 3+ hour tag teams).
So here it is, the final Save The Bees event at RnR Lounge:

Oh yeah, guess I should mention that for breakbeat bookings, I’m repping the Essential Breaks crew. Word ‘em up, son.
Old School Friday
Monday, August 20th, 2007It’s gonna be nothing but old school business this Friday on Expansion Broadcast. I personally love these nights on the show and this one looks to be our best one yet. More than likely we’ll have Godfather Sage and Cakes taking it way back for us. I know Deinfamous is all over the “old school tech step” front and I’m not quite sure what Ransom has in store for us just yet but I’m sure it’ll be “kick’ace.” Stay tuned. This Friday will be delicious!
Update…
Here’s the breakdown on sets I’ve received thus far:
- Cakes:
Theme wise I was planning on 97-99 deep soundscape stuff. I’m talking extremely noodly and melancholy…
- Ransom:
…I will cover the 1996 to 2002 spectrum, mainly playing tech-step but some other stuff sprinkled in.
- Godfather Sage:
i’m playing 94-96 deep shit. crunchy beats with a touch of light and dark.
August 15th at Five - Ransom playing breakbeats
Tuesday, August 7th, 2007“Wait what?”
Yup, I am Djing at a club for the third time this month, and I am playing breakbeats. August 2007 seems to be “theme” month for me as far as bookings go, and the guys at Essential Breaks asked if I’d like to play a set for them. I figured why not, I like breaks, and I need an excuse to play out all the 30 Hz & Baobinga tunes I have.
Here are the details:

Podcast 43 Part 2: Ransom live from Modern on August 5th, 2007
Tuesday, August 7th, 2007And here’s Harry’s set from the night. Gooooood times.
Podcast 42 Part 2: Harry “gassy tunes” Ransom
Monday, July 23rd, 2007Harry drops the big tunes in this set. He even dropped a Sub Focus track that I’m reluctant to admit that I sweat pretty hard.
An “Old School” Focus on August 1st @ Five
Friday, July 20th, 2007The next Focus event thrown by Upfront Industries at Five has two major MAJOR changes… well, major in my eyes. First off, this is going to be an old school event, with locals Godfather Sage, Locks and myself providing the history lesson, and from speaking to Locks and GFS, we have got 1990 through the present day covered… but we won’t be playing anything past 2002.
The second thing, and this is the kicker, Upfront decided to bring in a headliner. And not just any headliner. They’re bringing in Dj Lee (Metalheadz / Atlas, UK). Yeah, Dj Lee, no joke. This guy has been a key figure in drum’n'bass history, from his involvement with Timeless Recordings, the position he held at Vinyl Distribution (BIG TIMER) and his rank as one of the residents of Metalheadz’s Blue Note Sessions. I want to say he is playing an old school set as well, but even if he doesn’t, you do not want to miss out. Sure, I’m biased, I rate him as one of my favorite Djs, plus I was the first person to bring him to DC.
You want the details? You think you can take a night out hearing crusty classics on Five’s heavyweight sound system? Got some requests? Then check the following for the specifics:

This is big!
EXBC tonight!
Friday, July 20th, 2007Since no one else posted on our blog about tonight, I figured I should. Ok, so it’s the “Felony Special,” which would have made more sense if my friend Nick stuck to his first Dj name, Treason… but no, he decided he wanted to go by Guile. You know, the Street Fighter II character that would ruin your win streak with his well timed flip kicks, and the staggered Sonic Booms.
Yeah, that guy.
But I digress. Tonight is going to be good. Unless Guile and I end up just playing the Calyx & Teebee album on repeat. Then it might just be the two of us having fun, and everyone else wondering what is going on. The usual pre-show banter can be found online on the Buzzlife forum at:

So get your forties, turn up your speakers and have a listen. And learn to spell my last name properly.
Hitoi and Ransom are playing at Five on April 18th, 2007. You are totally going.
Thursday, April 12th, 2007That’s right, the two of us are opening up at Upfront’s Four Year Anniversary party at Five on Wednesday, April 18th, 2007. Also on the night are Baltimore’s Cannon Boyz, and then Hive (Violence / Metalheadz - SF) and Noisia (Vision / Subtitles / Renegade Hardware - NL) filling out the rest of the main room.
The kids love the Noisia.
Also, the rooftop will feature Tittsworth, making everyone get their funk on, plus the mysterious Bob Jong Lill (OMG WHO IS IT, WHO IS IT!?!?) and Ken Lazee. Check out the Upfront website for more details on the event. And be sure to come out, because we are primed to rave.
Expansion HolyShitWowBirthdayCRAAAAZYCast
Thursday, April 5th, 2007HOLY SHIT WOW
Tomorrow night is gonna be awesome. It’s muh birthday. AAAND I just got a huge promotion. AND everything is awesome. AAAND there’s gonna be a shit ton of dnb djs at my house. There will be no order to the madness. DJs will come and go as they please, passing across the decks like wind in the desert of my haunted soul. AWESOME.
People who are probably gonna come play some records at some point: ME, Skandalus, Jungle Jessi, Jukata, Carlo, Hyx, Psykofly, Quannum Logic, Darkenetiks, Hitoi, Hollowpoint Ransom, Brian Arsenault, and maybe even some more. Also, some of those people might not play. It’s a madhouse, NOBODY KNOWS!!!
